Kwania Hits 90% Road Works Target as Residents Hail Improved Transport

Kwania, Uganda | Residents of Akali and Inomo sub-counties have commended Kwania District Local Government for improving the district’s road network after completing 90% of its planned road construction and maintenance works for the 2025/2026 financial year.

According to the district leadership, a total of 161.3 kilometres out of the planned 169.3 kilometres of district roads have been rehabilitated and maintained under the annual road maintenance programme. The works, implemented by the Kwania District Engineering Department, have focused on improving access roads that had remained impassable for years, easing movement of people, agricultural produce and services, particularly ahead of the rainy season.

During a monitoring visit to the ongoing projects on Tuesday, Kwania District LC5 Chairperson George Kakoma Akacha said he regularly inspects road projects in person instead of relying solely on reports from technical staff, explaining that field visits enable him to verify progress and ensure value for public resources.

Akacha acknowledged that inadequate road equipment remains one of the district’s biggest obstacles, noting that the machinery allocated by the government is insufficient to meet the growing demand for road works. He, however, said the district plans to procure its own equipment to improve efficiency. Despite the challenge, the district managed to open more than 10 roads during the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year.

He added that the district has already prioritised several major roads for opening during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, including the Abura–Etikiber–Nambieso, Ogwok–Acoinino–Tioro, Aporotuku–Aderolongo–Abongomola, Cukobang–Abapiri–Owite–Iwangkwang Gweng, Amalakwanga–Alido and Corner Arido–Adograo–Alido roads.

Kwania District Engineer Edward Odongo Eyak said the district had planned to maintain 16 roads, including sections passing through swampy areas, covering a total distance of 169.3 kilometres during the 2025/2026 financial year. He said 161.3 kilometres had already been completed, representing about 90% of the planned works.

Odongo further explained that although Kwania District receives about Shs1 billion annually from the Central Government, only Shs250 million is allocated for road maintenance. He identified the high cost of fuel and inadequate road equipment as the major constraints affecting implementation. He added that in the next financial year, the district will begin work on the Akot–Oder–Abwong Primary School–Akali Road and the Amach Border–Agwa–Abongomola Road, with both projects expected to be completed during the next quarter.
