After Rivalry, Tumukunde Backs Muhwezi to Unite Kigezi Leaders

KAMPALA — Former rivals Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde and Security Minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi have publicly signalled a political rapprochement, with Tumukunde urging Muhwezi to lead Kigezi’s leaders in pursuing the region’s development after months of acrimony during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) internal elections.

Speaking at a meeting of Kigezi leaders, Tumukunde said Muhwezi should take charge of championing the region’s interests, pledging his support.

“Take command. We shall act behind you,” Tumukunde said.

He added that he was putting aside past disagreements in the interest of the people.

“We have now given you command. I have surrendered whatever all these things they say. It is hereby handed over. Offer leadership, taking to heart the interests of the people. Make sure our people are properly taken care of and that they remain the priority.”

The remarks mark a significant change in tone after the two influential politicians clashed during the NRM grassroots elections in Rukungiri. Muhwezi defeated Tumukunde in the race for Rukungiri District NRM chairperson amid reports that the two camps backed rival candidates in various party contests, deepening divisions within the ruling party in the district.

Muhwezi has since echoed the call for reconciliation. In a post on X following a meeting with Members of Parliament from Rukungiri and the wider Kigezi sub-region, he said unity among leaders was essential to unlocking development.

“When I talked about UNITY being the first point of service for our people, this is precisely what I meant. I thank colleague MPs from Rukungiri District for walking the talk. UNITY eliminates INTRIGUE and drives the DEVELOPMENT of our people in all sectors,” Muhwezi wrote.

He said the leaders had discussed regional priorities, including roads, water, bridges, schools, hospitals, electricity and the Parish Development Model, arguing that cooperation should take precedence over political rivalries.

The reconciliation comes as the new government settles into office following the 2026 general elections.

Tumukunde was elected Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality and was subsequently appointed Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, while Muhwezi retained his influential role in government.

The public display of unity is likely to be closely watched in Kigezi, where political competition between the two men has long shaped local NRM politics.

Their latest remarks suggest an effort to present a united front as the government begins implementing its new term’s agenda, with both leaders emphasising that regional development should take precedence over past political differences
