NRM Claims Landslide Victory in Village Women Council Elections, Rallies Support Ahead of LC I Polls

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has declared an overwhelming victory in the recently concluded Village Women Council Committee elections, saying the party won more than 91 percent of all positions, as it called on its members to mobilise for Tuesday’s LC I chairperson elections.

In an interim report released on Monday, the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr. Tanga Odoi, said the elections, held on July 23 across 71,214 villages nationwide, demonstrated the party’s continued grassroots strength. According to the preliminary results, the NRM won 326,248 of the 356,070 positions contested, representing 91.6 percent of the total.

The Independent National Democratic Party (INDP) secured 20,819 positions (5.8 percent), while other political parties won 8,748 positions (2.5 percent). Results for 255 positions were still pending. Dr. Odoi also noted that 119,341 positions were won unopposed, accounting for 33.6 percent of all positions.

“The NRM Electoral Commission is happy to report to the country that the NRM performed exceedingly well in the elections,” Dr. Odoi said, adding, “I take this opportunity to congratulate the NRM upon this landslide victory.” With the LC I chairperson elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, Dr. Odoi said the ruling party had fielded candidates in every village across the country.

“Tomorrow, Tuesday 28th of July, 2026, the country will go to the polls to elect LC I chairpersons. The NRM has flagbearers in all the 71,214 elective villages nationwide and has mobilised massively for the election,” he said. He called on party leaders, Members of Parliament, elected local government leaders, members of NRM leagues and the wider party membership to turn out and mobilise support for the party’s candidates.

Dr. Odoi further warned party members against campaigning against officially endorsed NRM candidates. “Party leaders and members are warned against standing against party flagbearers and must restrain themselves from campaigning against the flagbearers during these elections,” he said.

The commission also announced that the next phase of party primaries will take place on Friday, July 31, when elections for LC II chairpersons and Parish Women Council Committees will be conducted. The elections will be held through the electoral college system and voting by lining up. “The Commission will keep on giving periodical briefs on the subsequent elections for Women Councils from Sub- County to National Level,” Dr. Odoi said.
