24-Year-Old Woman Arrested Over Alleged Procurement of Miscarriage

Police in Rukungiri District have arrested a 24-year-old woman in connection with the alleged procurement of a miscarriage following an incident reported at Bugangari Police Station on Saturday.

According to police, the case was registered under CRB 737/2026 after it was reported at around 11:30 a.m. on July 26, 2026, by Julius Bafokorora, 45, a resident of Runyamunyu II Cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub-county.

The suspect has been identified as Annet Gumoshabe, a peasant and resident of Nyamirama Cell, Kakindo Parish, Bugangari Sub-county.

Police allege that Gumoshabe became pregnant about five months ago by Danson Akampereza. It is alleged that after informing him about the pregnancy, he denied responsibility for the unborn child.

Investigators further allege that this prompted the suspect to seek the services of a health practitioner on July 26, 2026, where she reportedly paid UGX 50,000 for a procedure that allegedly terminated the pregnancy.

The matter came to light after the suspect’s mother, Jane Tukamushaba, reportedly discovered that her daughter had terminated the pregnancy and informed the LC I Chairperson of Bagahwe Trading Centre, who subsequently reported the matter to Bugangari Police Station.

Police say a case of procuring a miscarriage was opened at Bugangari Police Station under VD SD Ref. 7/26/2026. Officers from the Scene of Crime Unit (SOCO) and homicide detectives visited and examined the scene. Statements have since been recorded from witnesses.

According to police, the fetus was retrieved and taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III Mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Police observations indicate that the fetus was a male of approximately five months’ gestation.

Annet Gumoshabe remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Police say they are pursuing the health practitioner alleged to have carried out the procedure, who is currently on the run. Investigators are also working to retrieve Police Form 48B as part of the ongoing inquiries.

Rukungiri District Police Commander, SSP Brian Ampaire, has appealed to members of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspected health practitioner to report to the nearest police station to assist with investigations.
