Police Constable Arrested After Shooting Businessman at Ntungamo LC1 Polling Station
NTUNGAMO – Police in Ntungamo District have arrested a police constable after a businessman was shot and injured during the LC1 chairperson elections on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Rwizi Regional Police, the incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on July 28, 2026, at a polling station in Mpaama Village, Kyamate Ward, Western Division, Ntungamo Municipality.
The victim, Bondev Obed, 32, a businessman and resident of Nyakibigi Cell, Kahunga Ward, Western Division, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg and was later registered under a General Inquiry File for unlawful wounding.
Police said two election constables, PC Innocent Musekese (No. 70487) and PC Frank Ngabirano (No. 71406), had been deployed to provide security at the polling station.
According to preliminary investigations, Obed reportedly arrived at the polling station and was instructed to join other voters in the queue. However, he allegedly refused and instead sat near a house adjacent to the polling centre.
Police said PC Musekese repeatedly ordered him to leave the area, but he allegedly declined. The officer reportedly attempted to chase him away using a stick, prompting Obed to become violent and grab the officer by the collar.
The officer is said to have struck Obed’s hand with his elbow in an attempt to free himself. Police further allege that three of Obed’s colleagues then surrounded the officer, prompting him to fire a single shot, which struck Obed in the left leg.
Following the incident, police secured and examined the scene, recorded statements from polling officials and other witnesses, and recovered the officer’s rifle loaded with 29 remaining rounds of ammunition.
PC Musekese was immediately arrested, and investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira said the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is still underway.
