NRM Sweeps Jinja City LC1 Polls, Wins 90 Chairperson Seats

The ruling National Resistance Movement has maintained its grassroots dominance in Jinja City after securing the majority of LC1 chairperson positions in preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission.

JINJA — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has emerged the biggest winner in the Jinja City Local Council One (LC1) elections, securing 90 of the 117 chairperson positions announced so far.

Jinja Resident City Commissioner Salim Kumaketch said the results show the ruling party taking the “lion’s share” of leadership at the grassroots level.

Independent candidates followed with 12 seats, while the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) won 11 positions.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) each secured two LC1 chairperson seats.

However, voting was not conducted in 24 cells due to challenges that affected the electoral process. Kumaketch did not provide details on the nature of the disruptions.

The results reinforce the NRM’s organisational strength at the village level, where LC1 leaders play a key role in community mobilisation, local administration and political engagement.

Although opposition parties secured fewer positions, their victories indicate continued competition in some parts of the city, while the performance of independent candidates points to a preference for non-party-affiliated leaders in several communities.

Authorities have called for calm as preparations continue to conclude elections in the affected cells.

The Electoral Commission is expected to provide further guidance on when voting will take place in the remaining areas.
