Ethiopian Players, Team Officials Abscond After Youth Football Tournament In Sweden

Around 20 people from Ethiopia have gone missing after taking part in the Gothia Cup football tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden.

According to the police, the boys are between 14 and 17 years old, and one or more leaders are also missing.

On the final day of this year’s Gothia Cup, a school administrator discovered that the Ethiopian team that had been staying at the school had left without reporting it, Göteborgs-Posten (via Sweden Herald) writes.

Gothia Cup contacted the police, who filed a missing persons report. The police now state that the individuals have not returned to Ethiopia and that it appears to be a voluntary disappearance.

“There are no indications that there is anything illegal behind it, such as human trafficking or similar, says Ellinor Halldin at the police unit for missing persons in Region West to the newspaper.”

The history of international athletes absconding or defecting after participating in European youth tournaments is a recurring phenomenon driven primarily by political oppression, economic hardship, and the exploitation of predatory sports agents.

Youth tournaments in Europe provide a rare window of mobility for young nationals from restrictive or underdeveloped regimes to secure visas and legally exit their home countries, creating prime conditions for intentional disappearances.

Sweden’s Gothia Cup, the world’s largest international youth football tournament, has historically been a focal point for young athletes seeking asylum.

Eritrea holds the most documented history of national team athletes absconding during international tournaments, a direct consequence of the country’s mandatory, indefinite military conscription and repressive political environment.

The problem became so severe that the Eritrean government historically mandated that athletes pay a steep financial guarantee before being allowed to board international flights.

The continuous risk of defection led the state to withdraw its national squad from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers entirely, fearing the team would disappear during its mandatory neutral-ground matches abroad.

Similar incidents involving West and East African youth delegations have sporadically occurred at various Scandinavian summer youth cups over the decades, where open tournament campuses and relaxed regional transit facilitate easy disappearances.
