Contractor Given 21 Days to Finish Delayed Wakiso Roads

The government has given Jilk Construction Company three weeks to complete two delayed road projects in Makindye-Ssabagabo Division, Wakiso District, warning that failure to meet the deadline could trigger further action against the contractor.

The government has given Jilk Construction Company a 21-day ultimatum to complete two delayed road projects in Makindye-Ssabagabo Division, Wakiso District, after expressing concern over slow progress despite the nearing completion of the contract period.

The projects, being implemented under the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), include the 1.8-kilometre Municipal Extension Road and the 620-metre Nakayenga Road.

The directive was issued by State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Kabuye Kyofatogabye during an impromptu inspection of the projects to assess their progress.

Kyofatogabye said the contractor was given an 18-month contract to execute the works, but with only one month remaining before its expiry, the projects had fallen behind schedule.

“We have given the contractor 21 days to speed up the works and ensure these roads are completed. The public has waited long enough, and there is no reason why the projects should continue to delay,” the minister said.

He said government-funded infrastructure projects must be delivered within agreed timelines to allow communities to benefit from improved transport networks and other services.

The minister directed the contractor to increase manpower and deploy more equipment to accelerate construction works before the revised deadline.

The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme is intended to improve urban infrastructure, including roads, drainage systems and mobility networks across the metropolitan area.

Residents welcomed the ongoing construction but raised concerns over the slow pace of works, saying delays have affected movement, transport operations and business activities in the area.

Once completed, the Municipal Extension Road and Nakayenga Road are expected to improve connectivity within Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality by easing traffic flow and improving access to homes, businesses and social services.

Government officials said monitoring of the projects will continue to ensure contractors meet agreed work schedules and deliver value for money on publicly funded investments.
