Doctor Arrested After Visiting Besigye’s Ward at Mulago Hospital
KAMPALA — Police briefly detained Ugandan doctor Moses Mukose on Saturday after he visited the sixth floor of Mulago National Referral Hospital, where opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye is admitted under security guard, before releasing him on police bond.
According to a police bond document seen by ChimpReports, Mukose was released on bond after being accused of “disobeying lawful ordersâ€.
The document requires him to report back to Mulago Police Station on August 10 at 10:00 a.m. as investigations continue.
Mukose said he had gone to the sixth floor to check on his father-in-law, who is admitted on the same ward as Besigye.
After leaving the patient’s room, he said, security personnel intercepted him and accused him of having been sent to spy on officers guarding the detained opposition leader.
“They alleged that I had been sent to spy on them,†Mukose said, insisting he had only visited his hospitalized relative.
Police have not publicly commented on the circumstances of his arrest beyond the offence indicated on the bond form.
The incident comes amid heightened security at Mulago Hospital following Besigye’s admission. Access to the floor where the veteran opposition leader is receiving treatment has been tightly controlled, with security personnel restricting movement around the ward.
Besigye, who is facing treason-related charges alongside his co-accused, was admitted to Mulago after falling ill during court proceedings last week.
The High Court subsequently ordered the Uganda Prisons Service to file a medical report on his condition before the next hearing.
