Kampala Metropolitan Police Arrest 150 Over LC Election Offences

Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a total of 150 suspects in connection with election-related offences committed during the recently concluded Local Council (LC) elections.

According to police, the electoral process began on July 28 and concluded on August 1, 2026, following residual elections held in some areas due to various challenges.

Of the 150 suspects arrested, 78 have already been arraigned before court, while 72 remain under investigation.

Addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday morning, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the offences under investigation include attempted murder, intimidation, malicious damage to property, and other election-related crimes.

Kawala cited an attempted murder case in which a voter was allegedly dragged from the queue of a rival candidate before being stabbed and injured. She said two suspects, Kiwanuka Moses and Mutebi Mohammed, have been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred in Luwunga Village, Nama Sub-county, Mukono District.

In a separate incident, Kawala said Mukono Police are investigating the poisoning of four goats belonging to a voter who was reportedly targeted during the elections. The incident occurred in Kalagala, Kisoga Town Council, Mukono District. No arrests have been made so far.

Kawala also briefed the media about a protest by a group of youths who were dissatisfied with the election results for the LC chairperson. The group blocked a road and cooked food in the middle of it in protest.

The incident occurred in Masajja Kibira Zone, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. Police dispersed the protesters and recovered charcoal stoves, saucepans, and food items, which have been retained as exhibits in the investigation.

Kawala urged all individuals with grievances arising from the recently concluded LC elections to pursue legal and peaceful means of resolving disputes instead of engaging in criminal acts.

Looking ahead to the forthcoming LC II elections, she assured the public that police are fully prepared to provide security and ensure a peaceful electoral process across the Kampala Metropolitan area.

She called upon candidates, supporters, agents, and the general public to remain calm and maintain law and order during the parish elections scheduled for August 10, 2026.
