Luuka Chiefdom Prime Minister Daudi Lwiigo steps down after 18 years

Appointed Prime Minister of Obwakyabingwa bwa Luuka in 2008, Lwiigo has overseen the chiefdom’s cultural and administrative affairs for nearly two decades, playing a key role in advancing the institution’s programmes and activities.

Luuka, Uganda: The Prime Minister of Luuka Chiefdom, Owek. Daudi Lwiigo Isabirye, has officially resigned from office, bringing to an end an 18-year tenure at the helm of the cultural institution’s administration.

Addressing journalists at his office on Monday, Lwiigo revealed that he formally submitted his resignation to His Royal Highness Willington Nabwana, the Royal Chief of Luuka, on July 3, 2026, requesting to be relieved of his duties after serving as Prime Minister since 2008.

“I wrote to the Royal Chief on 3rd July asking for resignation and he accepted and replied to my resignation letter on 27th July 2026,” Lwiigo said.

He added: “I have officially asked the Royal Chief, His Royal Highness Willington Nabwana, to allow me to quit the office of Prime Minister after serving since 2008.”

Lwiigo expressed gratitude to the Royal Chief for the confidence placed in him over the years, saying it had been an honour to serve the people of Luuka through the cultural institution.

He also thanked residents of Luuka for the support they extended to him throughout his tenure, noting that their cooperation enabled him to effectively execute his responsibilities.

The Royal Chief has not yet named a successor. Officials from the chiefdom said the transition process and appointment of a new Prime Minister will be communicated in due course.

Leaders and residents have since paid tribute to Lwiigo’s long service, crediting him with promoting unity, preserving cultural values and supporting the development of the Luuka Chiefdom during his time in office.
