Coventry City make surprise approach to sign “phenomenal” Chelsea star on loan

Coventry City know they will need plenty of quality if they are to survive in the Premier League after securing promotion back to the top flight.

The Sky Blues have already enjoyed an impressive summer in the transfer market, with winger Loum Tchaouna arriving from Burnley, highly-rated centre-back Aurèle Amenda joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in a club-record deal, while Frank Onyeka’s loan switch from Brentford has also been made permanent.

Recruitment is expected to continue before the transfer window closes, though, and the club’s latest target would certainly be one of the most eye-catching additions of the summer.

Coventry Make Approach for Mudryk

According to the Daily Mail, Coventry City are among the clubs to have made an approach to Chelsea over the possibility of signing Mykhailo Mudryk on loan.

The 25-year-old, once hailed as “phenomenal” by Chelsea supporters, has become available again after being cleared to return to football following his lengthy doping suspension.

Frank Lampard is believed to be interested in a reunion with the Ukraine international after working with him during his time at Stamford Bridge, while several other clubs have also registered their interest.

Chelsea are yet to make a final decision on Mudryk’s future. The current plan is for new boss Xabi Alonso to assess the winger during the club’s pre-season tour before deciding whether he should remain at Stamford Bridge or head out on loan.

Mudryk has not played competitive football since November 2024 after testing positive for meldonium, but he has now been cleared to resume his career following changes to WADA’s testing thresholds and an agreement with the relevant authorities.

Despite his lengthy absence, there remains significant interest in the former Shakhtar Donetsk star, who joined Chelsea in an £89 million move after establishing himself as one of Europe’s brightest young wingers.

For Coventry, landing a player of Mudryk’s profile would represent a major statement of intent as they prepare for life back in the Premier League, although any deal is likely to depend on Chelsea’s assessment of his fitness over the coming weeks.
