Liverpool could set astronomical Cody Gakpo asking price due to Elliot Anderson

Liverpool star Cody Gakpo continues to be linked with a potential exit from the club this summer, with the stance of no sale potentially rocked by a huge transfer

Liverpool is determined to keep hold of Cody Gakpo this summer despite links with Tottenham, but that doesn't mean it's guaranteed they won't accept a gargantuan offer later in the window.

The winger continues to be linked with a move to Tottenham, as the North London club shows interest in landing him as part of a major rebuild in the summer transfer window.

With a transfer spend already topping $300 million, largely on improving the defence and midfield, Gakpo is viewed as a versatile target who could improve the Spurs frontline on the left and as a striker. Considering the lack of attacking depth available to Andoni Iraola, it's no surprise that Liverpool has rejected the notion of a transfer, but that isn't the full picture.

The Reds will reject an exit, up to a point. Reports have claimed that a "huge sum" could sway the Merseyside outfit into sanctioning a sale, though it has been largely unclear what would be deemed a "huge sum".

That is until now, as The Athletic reports that the club will be judging Gakpo's value against other deals in the market to sense how much he could be worth.

Elliot Anderson's move to Manchester City, which hit $156 million, is claimed to be one consideration, alongside Chelsea's deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers, which cost $157 million.

It's unclear whether Liverpool will be asking for that astronomical price outright, or whether it will just be used to judge the value of the star in comparison to those moves.

Tottenham is ramping up plans to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool this summer

The market has also seen Anthony Gordon move from Newcastle to Barcelona for roughly $94 million, which may be a similar type of move relative to Gakpo.

It remains to be seen whether a fee in that range or above is one that Tottenham is willing to reach at this stage, though its hardly slowing down in the pursuit of the Netherlands international.

The report adds that Spurs has registered interest directly with Gakpo's representatives, marking a step that will now leave the future down to the player before club-to-club talks.

It is also claimed that Liverpool is looking to strengthen the forward ranks, rather than weaken it, before Iraola gets the season underway, which plays into the stance of not accepting an exit unless a huge sum of money arrives.

The saga seems far from over, as Tottenham remains keen on getting a deal over the line, even with Liverpool making it clear that won't happen without a large investment.

Before any final decision is made on that front, Iraola will soon get a first chance to work with Gakpo in preseason and see how the star fares in his style of play.
