Suspected Burglar Shot During Attempted Break-in at Ministry of Works Camp

A suspected burglar is nursing gunshot wounds after he was shot by police while allegedly attempting to break into a Ministry of Works camp in Kagadi District on Monday night. The suspect has been identified as Anthony Katamba, 18, a resident of Mambugu Cell, Mambugu Ward in Kagadi Town Council.

According to information obtained by Uganda Radio Network, Katamba allegedly sneaked into the Ministry of Works camp with the intention of stealing unspecified items. Police say officers, acting on intelligence, responded to the scene and found the suspect inside the government installation. They reportedly ordered him to identify himself and explain his presence at the camp.

However, police say Katamba attempted to flee. Officers fired warning shots in an effort to stop him, but he allegedly continued running, prompting police to shoot him in the leg before arresting him. He was initially taken to Kagadi General Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he remains admitted under tight police guard.

Albertine Regional Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to establish whether the suspect acted alone or had accomplices. Hakiza warned members of the public against trespassing on restricted government installations, saying anyone found committing criminal offences would face the law.
