Over 470 Ukrainian service members have been convicted in Russia for taking part in the 2024 incursion into the borderline Kursk Region and committing crimes against civilians, a spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office said in response to a TASS request.

"More than 470 service members of the Ukrainian armed forces have been convicted <...> for their involvement in the incursion into the Kursk Region and crimes against civilians, with verdicts against 89 wanted defendants delivered in absentia," the spokesperson said.

The convicted individuals include 36 foreign mercenaries from 13 countries. "Twenty of them have been sentenced in absentia," the spokesperson said, adding: "These mercenaries include citizens of Georgia, the United States, Lithuania, Paraguay, Denmark, Malta, Switzerland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, New Zealand and the United Kingdom."

"These individuals have received long prison terms, up to life sentences," the official specified.

The Russian Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office said earlier that the actions of Ukrainian troops in the Kursk Region had been classified under Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Commission of an act of terrorism by a group of individuals acting in collusion that results in grave consequences").
