Three Prison Officers Injured, Two Guns Stolen at Kygegwa Prison Break
Three prison officers were injured and two guns stolen after armed assailants attacked Kygegwa Government Prison in the early hours of Friday.
The attack happened at around 1:00am when the unknown attackers attempted to break into the prison and confronted three officers who were on night duty.
The assailants managed to take away two guns belonging to the Uganda Prisons Service.
The stolen firearms, registered as UG PRI 563615124 and UG Pol. 565828358, were each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The three officers injured in the attack are Sergeant Warden Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret and Warder Odongo Joshua.
They were rushed to Kygegwa General Hospital for treatment.
Despite the attack, the Uganda Prisons Service says no prisoner escaped from the facility.
Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said other security agencies were immediately called in and investigations are underway.
Security teams are now searching for the attackers and the two stolen guns.
The Prisons Service has asked anyone with information that could help security agencies arrest the suspects or recover the firearms to report to the nearest police station or call 0800144144.
The attack comes after the assailants targeted officers responsible for guarding the prison during the night, raising concerns about the security of prison facilities and personnel.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity or number of suspects involved in the attack.
