Parliament Orders Staff to Submit Academic Documents for Verification

Parliament has commenced a comprehensive verification exercise for all its employees, with staff directed to submit full academic records and a detailed employment history dating back to their date of appointment.

On Wednesday, employees received a circular instructing them to present academic documents from nursery school through to their highest qualifications.

They were also required to provide records of all promotions and postings held at Parliament since they were first employed.

“This exercise is aimed at establishing the authenticity of academic qualifications and verifying the career progression of staff. All employees are required to comply fully,” the internal memo read in part.

According to officials, the verification will focus on two key areas: academic qualifications and promotions.

The Clerk to Parliament’s office says the process is part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability, professionalism and meritocracy within the institution.

“We want to ensure that everyone in Parliament meets the required qualifications for the positions they hold and that promotions have followed the proper procedures,” a senior official in the Human Resource Directorate told this reporter.

The exercise comes amid growing concerns about ghost workers and irregular promotions in public institutions. Parliament says it wants to weed out any discrepancies and align staff records with Public Service standards.

“This is not a witch hunt. It is about cleaning our house and ensuring that we have the right people in the right positions with the right papers,” another official added.

Staff have been given a deadline to submit the documents to the Human Resource Department. The verification team will cross-check the academic papers with the issuing institutions and audit promotion files against service records.

Legislators on the Parliamentary Commission have backed the exercise, saying it will help restore public confidence in Parliament as an employer.

“Parliament must lead by example. If we are to demand accountability from government, we must first be accountable ourselves,” one Commissioner noted.

The results of the verification are expected to inform future recruitment, promotions and disciplinary actions where necessary.
