Twelve Injured in Road Crash at Ttamu in Mityana

The crash involved a municipal town clerk and a taxi carrying 10 passengers, with police attributing the collision to an alleged loss of control after the pickup driver was distracted by oncoming headlights.

Twelve people were injured in a head-on collision involving a Toyota Hilux pickup and a Toyota Hiace taxi at Ttamu Trading Centre along the Kampala-Mityana-Mubende road on Saturday night.

The crash occurred at about 9:45pm on August 15, 2026, as the Toyota Hilux double-cabin pickup, registration number UG 709M, was travelling from Kampala towards Mityana and Mubende.

Police said the driver, identified as Kateba Godfrey, 48, the Town Clerk of Mityana Municipality and a resident of Mityana District, was reportedly distracted by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle as he approached Ttamu Trading Centre.

He allegedly lost control of the pickup, crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Toyota Hiace, registration number UBG 627F.

The Hiace was being driven by Ssekande Richard, 34, a resident of Kyegegwa District, who was travelling with 10 passengers.

Both drivers and the 10 passengers sustained injuries in the crash, with the victims rushed to Mityana General Hospital and nearby clinics for medical attention.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said traffic investigators from Mityana Police visited and documented the crash scene under the command of ASP Francis Natukwasa.

“The crash scene was visited and documented by our traffic investigators. The victims were removed from the wreckage and rushed to Mityana General Hospital and nearby clinics for medical attention,” Kigozi said.

The wreckage of both vehicles was towed to the Mityana Traffic Police Yard as investigations continue.

Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the alleged distraction by headlights and the subsequent loss of control by the Hilux driver.

Kigozi urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving at night, and avoid distractions that could compromise visibility and vehicle control.

“Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident are still ongoing,” he said.
