Rapper Ruyonga has sparked debate in Uganda's music industry after arguing that Afrigo Band's legendary vocalist and instrumentalist Moses Matovu holds a bigger place in the country's musical history than Leone Island boss Jose Chameleone.

The debate emerged during a discussion about Uganda's greatest musicians, with Ruyonga placing Matovu among the country's all-time greats.

According to the rapper, musical greatness should be measured by skill, longevity and cultural influence rather than hit songs and commercial success alone.

"Those Afrigo songs, those ones are principalities. Those are monuments in this industry," Ruyonga said.

While acknowledging Chameleone's influence in Uganda and across East Africa, Ruyonga questioned whether the singer's music has achieved the same level of lasting recognition beyond the region.

"Chameleon has done things, but let me tell you, when you cross East Africa, who is singing Chameleone?" he asked.

Ruyonga further argued that longevity and cultural impact should play a major role when ranking musicians, drawing comparisons with debates surrounding legendary figures in American hip-hop.

His comments have since opened another conversation about how Uganda's greatest musicians should be ranked, particularly between artists whose influence spans generations and those who have achieved major commercial success in the modern era.
