Young Mulo and Colleague to Spend More Than 100 Years in Jail for Murdering Boda Boda Cyclists

Kampala — High Court Judge Alex Mackay Ajiji has sentenced Aloysius Tamale, alias Young Mulo, and John Bosco Mugisha, alias Tamale, to 40 years in prison for the murder of boda boda rider Derrick Muwonge and the subsequent theft of his motorcycle.

The offence was committed on June 29, 2019, in Mengo, Kampala District, after the convicts hired Muwonge, pretending to be passengers, before brutally murdering him and stealing his motorcycle.

The duo were arrested after CCTV footage showing the murder went viral, helping investigators identify and apprehend the suspects.

The 40-year sentence comes on top of a previous 70-year prison sentence imposed on the two convicts by the High Court in connection with other offences. With credit for the six years and 11 months they have already spent on remand, the pair are expected to spend approximately 103 years in prison.

While passing sentence, Justice Ajiji observed that the aggravating factors outweighed the mitigating factors.

Through their lawyer, Richard Kumbuga, the convicts pleaded for leniency, citing their youthful age, remorse and alleged rehabilitation while in prison.

One of the convicts, Aloysius Tamale, however, maintained his innocence, telling court: “I have been convicted of an offence I didn’t commit. I pray for a lenient sentence. I pray to serve that sentence together with my first sentence.”

Court was also taken by surprise when Tamale told the judge that he had a dream of becoming Uganda’s President in the coming years.

State Prosecutor Happiness Ainebyona urged the court to impose a maximum deterrent sentence, arguing that the convicts had shown no genuine signs of remorse.

Ainebyona told court that the convicts had continued to make excuses, noting that one of them had even refused to appear in chambers for sentencing.

She further informed court that the two had previous criminal records, having each been convicted in three other cases.

The prosecution argued that the convicts should be kept away from society because they were repeat offenders whose criminal activities had largely involved targeting and murdering boda boda riders.

The court subsequently handed them the 40-year sentences, taking into account the seriousness of the offences and the need for a deterrent punishment.

They have been reminded about their right to appeal both sentence or conviction Incase they are not satisfied.
