Ssese, Buddu and Ssingo Contribute Shs48m to Buganda’s Luwalo Initiative

The contributions will support Buganda Kingdom development programmes, including efforts to improve access to healthcare for communities living on the islands and waterways.

Communities from Ssese, Buddu and Ssingo counties have contributed Shs48.77 million to the Buganda Kingdom’s Luwalo lwaffe initiative to support development programmes across the Kingdom.

The contributions were presented during a courtesy visit by Kabaka’s subjects from the three counties to the Buganda Kingdom headquarters.

The money was raised from several sub-counties, including Mutuba II Butemba in Ssingo and Mutuba 16 Lwankoni in Buddu, as well as communities in Ssese led by Mutuba II Kalangala, Mutuba I Mazinga and Ssaabaddu Mugoye.

The Rotary Club of Kampala Islanders also contributed to the initiative.

Receiving the contributions, Buganda’s Second Deputy Katikkiro and Treasurer, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, urged people in the Kingdom to remain united around the Kabaka and strengthen the institution of the monarchy.

“I want to appeal to the people of Buganda and friends of Buganda to remain firmly behind our Kabaka and his government,” Nsibirwa said.

He cautioned against negative messages that could undermine unity within the Kingdom, urging people to remain focused on development.

Nsibirwa also called for greater participation in Buganda Kingdom affairs, using coffee farmers as an example of people who should remain committed to productive activities despite discouraging voices.

He said collective effort enables communities to mobilise significant resources and advance development programmes.

The Treasurer particularly emphasised the need to improve access to quality and specialised healthcare for people living in the islands.

Buganda Minister for Local Governments, the Kabaka’s Tours and Buganda Affairs Outside the Kingdom, Joseph Kawuki, thanked the people of Ssese for their participation in Luwalo lwaffe.

Kawuki urged communities to remain committed until the initiative achieves its intended objectives.

He also called on the government to clarify arrangements for transporting students back to their homes during the forthcoming school holiday, noting that many students attend schools far from their homes.

Ssese County Chief Augustine Kweba Kasirye said the economic situation in the islands was changing as a result of the Kingdom’s Mmwanyi Terimba programme.

He said communities were increasingly diversifying their livelihoods by combining farming with fishing, which has traditionally been the main economic activity in Ssese.

Meanwhile, members of the Rotary Club of Provisional Kampala Islanders, led by Bernad Ochan, contributed Shs6 million towards the construction of a mobile water-based hospital.

The club also pledged to increase its contribution to the project in the future.

The mobile hospital is expected to be constructed in Mutunda and will provide medical services to people living and travelling on the islands and waterways.

Members of the public have been encouraged to support the initiative, which is intended to improve access to healthcare and help save lives in communities that face challenges accessing conventional health facilities.

The contributions add to ongoing efforts by communities across Buganda to support the Kingdom’s development programmes and strengthen unity around the Kabaka and the institution of the monarchy.
