Four Arrested Over Aggravated Robberies in Luweero

Police in Luweero District have arrested four suspected gang members accused of carrying out aggravated robberies, burglaries and attacks on boda-boda riders in the district and neighbouring areas.

Police in Luweero District have arrested four suspected members of a gang accused of carrying out a series of aggravated robberies, burglaries and attacks on boda-boda riders across Luweero and neighbouring areas.

The suspects have been identified as Reagan Kalyango, alias My Lord, who Plice allege is the group leader; Ismail Ssenyonga, alias Kashagama, also described as a gang leader; Umar Ivan Kigenyi; and Hussien Mutesasira, alias Kapele.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the suspects were arrested during intelligence-led operations conducted in Luweero, Matugga and Wobulenzi.

Twiineamazima said the suspects had confessed to participating in a series of aggravated robberies targeting members of the public, businesses and boda-boda riders.

“The suspects have confessed to a series of aggravated robberies. Their alleged crimes include stoning people with pavers, cutting people with pangas, using iron bars to attack and waylay boda-boda riders, and breaking into businesses and shops,” Twiineamazima said.

Police said the alleged incidents occurred in Bombo Town Council, Luweero Town Council and Nakasongola District.

The latest arrests are part of wider operations targeting suspected criminal gangs in the area. Police said five suspects were arrested in Bajjo, Bombo, Buyego and Mile 21 areas of Bombo Town Council.

Seven other suspects were arrested in Kasana, another seven in Zirobwe Town Council, while 10 others were arrested in Kalagala Sub-county.

Twiineamazima said all the suspects would be taken to court to face the next stage of the legal process.

“All the arrested suspects will be taken to court for further legal action,” he said.

He said the operations would continue as police seek to disrupt criminal networks involved in robberies and attacks across Luweero.

“These operations form part of the Police’s ongoing efforts to prevent and disrupt criminal activities and to dismantle notorious gangs involved in waylaying, aggravated robberies and burglaries across Luweero District,” Twiineamazima said.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious people and activities to the nearest police station.
