Police in Rwenzori East have heightened security and deployment ahead of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Label Marathon scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Kasese Municipality.

The marathon is expected to attract thousands of participants and visitors, including runners from different parts of the world. The event will feature races ranging from 5 kilometres to the full 42-kilometre marathon.

According to Rwenzori East Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, security has been strengthened before, during and after the event to ensure the safety of participants, visitors and the general public.

Maate said police, together with other sister security agencies, have increased their visibility and deployment across the municipality because of the magnitude of the event and the expected number of visitors.

He said some roads will be temporarily closed during the morning hours to facilitate the smooth and uninterrupted running of the marathon.

Maate urged members of the public to remain disciplined, cooperative and follow all security directives issued during the event. He also called upon residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons or objects to security personnel.

He warned individuals planning to take advantage of the event to steal bags, phones, motorcycle spare parts or break into houses in Kasese Municipality and its outskirts that security personnel will be on high alert throughout the event.

“The security alertness will cover the entire municipality, so those with ill intentions should not risk disrupting the event,” Maate said.

The overall security operation will be commanded by Rwenzori East Regional Police Commander SSP Odoch Denis, deputised by SSP Muhumuza Alex, while SP Hiwumbire Hassan will oversee security at the municipality division level.

Maate said the security situation in the area remains normal and calm, adding that police will continue monitoring developments to ensure a peaceful and successful marathon.
