Ntungamo RDC Urges Parents to Protect Children During School Holiday

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Ntungamo District, Mrs Kagaiga Miriam Mugisha, has urged parents to take greater care of their children during the second-term school holiday.

RDC Kagaiga commended parents for their cooperation and commitment towards educating their children, particularly their efforts to pay school fees and support them throughout the school term.

She also called upon headteachers to exercise patience and understanding towards parents who may have outstanding school fees, noting that families face different social and economic challenges.

The RDC encouraged parents to involve children in productive domestic activities such as digging and harvesting coffee to help them gain practical skills and experience. However, she cautioned parents against relying solely on children’s involvement in work at the expense of their education.

She urged parents to ensure that children spend part of the holiday revising their schoolwork so that they are adequately prepared for the third term.

RDC Kagaiga further cautioned parents who take their children to markets or other workplaces to ensure that they return home by 6:00 p.m., particularly girls, whom she described as vulnerable to people who may take advantage of them and negatively affect their future.

She also called upon children to respect and obey their parents, saying that respect for parents is a value encouraged by God.

The RDC encouraged children to participate in constructive community activities such as singing, playing football and prayer, saying such activities can help keep them occupied and discourage them from engaging in crime and other harmful behaviours.

She further urged parents to teach their children how to pray according to their respective faiths, saying spiritual guidance can help children remain disciplined and focused on positive values.

RDC Kagaiga warned parents against exposing children to risky working environments, saying some children may encounter challenges that could negatively affect their education, safety and future.
