LEGACY OF SERVICE: Ssekandi commends Gen. Katumba Wamala upon retirement after 47 years

KAMPALA, UGANDA — Presidential Envoy on Political Affairs and Vice President Emeritus Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has delivered a warm tribute to Gen. Katumba Wamala upon his retirement after 47 years of military and public service, describing the veteran general as a leader whose humility and commitment to ordinary citizens leave an enduring legacy.

Ssekandi made the remarks on Friday at his Kampala Kingdom headquarters, where photographs capturing Gen. Katumba Wamala’s visit were shared to mark the conclusion of his long public-service career.

For Ssekandi, the occasion served as both a farewell and an opportunity to remind younger Ugandans that true leadership is ultimately measured by dedication to national service rather than high rank.

“Congratulations to you, Gen. Wamala, on a well-deserved retirement after 47 phenomenal years of service!” Ssekandi said.

The Vice President Emeritus commended the general’s leadership style, emphasizing that his accessibility set him apart throughout his decades in office.

“Beyond the ranks and uniform, you have always been a leader of the people—approachable, humble, and deeply committed to the well-being of ordinary Ugandans,” Ssekandi noted.

Gen. Katumba Wamala’s retirement marks the end of a 47-year journey through Uganda’s military structure and senior public administration. Rising through the ranks to top leadership roles, he became one of the country’s most recognizable and respected public figures.

Ssekandi emphasized that Katumba’s career offers important lessons in institutional memory, discipline, and mentorship for the next generation of leaders stepping into public office.

“Your dedicated service in both military and public office stands as a shining example for the younger generation,” he added.

Contribution to National Security

Ssekandi also recognized the general’s role in strengthening national security and public administration over nearly five decades.

“Uganda is safer and stronger because of leaders like you,” Ssekandi stated, pointing to Katumba’s contributions across both military and civilian institutions.

Reflecting on the nature of public service transitions, Ssekandi noted that while offices change hands and uniforms are laid aside, the institutional impact of dedicated service remains within communities and national bodies.

He concluded his tribute with a simple message: “Happy retirement, General!”
