Rain destroys homes, gardens in Lwengo

A heavy downpour has left a wide range of destruction in three villages in Lwengo District.

The Sunday overnight downpour, accompanied by storms which lasted over two hours, razed down several homes, plantations, and a public school in the area.

Some of the most affected villages include: Kawule, where 30 houses were destroyed; 10 houses were razed to the ground in Lwenkoma, while in Kyampalakata, over 10 plantations were devastated.

Locals have asked their leaders to come to their rescue because their area is likely to be hit by hunger since some of the destroyed food crops were about to be harvested.

“My house was destroyed, and this has left me and my family homeless,” Mr Samuel Nsamba, one of the affected residents, said

Mr Robert Ssekabira, the vice chairperson of Malongo Sub-County, said the affected households are in dire need of food relief and building materials they can use to erect new houses since most of their homes were destroyed.

Mr Abas Kizito, the Lwengo District chairperson, said they are going to reach out to the area members of Parliament to help the affected households as they wait for humanitarian relief from the Office of the Prime Minister.

“People were busy in their gardens preparing for the next planting season, but they were surprised to get heavy rain that ended up destroying their food crops”. He added.

“We pray that the office of the Prime Minister swiftly intervenes and helps our people.” He added

August –December usually constitutes the second major rain season in Uganda, but like it has been in the past three years, the rain this season has been delayed by several weeks in most districts of central Uganda.

Recently, weather experts predicted that the rain will be destructive in some parts of the country, especially in mountainous areas and urged the public to be alert.
