‘Clergy Should Learn From Kenya’ – Ssenyonyi Reacts to Archbishop Anyolo Rejecting Ruto’s Donation
The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi has made headlines after rejecting donations from Kenyan leaders, including President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Archbishop Philip Anyolo confirmed that the funds given to the church by the two leaders would be refunded.
The decision sparked widespread debate, both within Kenya and neighboring Uganda, where many citizens voiced their thoughts on social media.
Some applauded the Kenyan church’s decision, while others questioned the intentions behind political donations to religious institutions.
The news caught the attention of Ugandans, who compared the situation to their own experiences with political leaders and religious organizations.
Kabuye Patrick, a Ugandan citizen, praised Kenyan religious leaders for setting an example by rejecting money from politicians.
He criticized Ugandan religious leaders for readily accepting government handouts, suggesting they often use their influence to support those in power.
Benards Kelly drew a biblical analogy, referencing Zacchaeus, who returned stolen wealth before hosting Jesus.
He questioned whether religious leaders should judge politicians or whether politicians are using donations to silence the church and cover up unethical practices.
Musisi Dickens highlighted the difference in public perception of leadership between Kenya and Uganda.
He pointed out that President Ruto has been in office for only two years and is already facing criticism, while Ugandans have endured nearly 40 years under the same leadership.
He sarcastically suggested that Ugandans might need stronger measures to express their frustrations.
National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi also weighed in on the matter.
His remarks added to the ongoing debate, as many Ugandans used the situation to highlight governance issues and the relationship between politics and religion in their country.
The Catholic Archdiocese’s decision has raised questions about the role of religious institutions in politics.
While some view the rejection as a courageous stand for integrity, others believe it reflects the increasing tension between leaders and the church.
