Museveni Is So Scared and Intimidated Since Elections Are Approaching, Says Dr. Miria Matembe
Dr. Miria Matembe, a well-known Ugandan politician and activist, has raised worries about President Yoweri Museveni as the country approaches elections. She believes that the president is feeling frightened and threatened by the growing political energy around opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his new party, People's Front for Freedom (PFF).
Dr. Matembe explains that Dr. Besigye has recently brought new energy to his political efforts, which she describes as a "new fire." Although the FDC had been relatively quiet, recent events, including disagreements within the party, have led to the formation of a new coalition called the People's Front for Freedom (PFF). This new group could energise supporters and mobilise young people who have been increasingly unhappy with their situation since the last elections in 2021.
According to Dr. Matembe, this fresh momentum is making President Museveni anxious about his hold on power. She suggests that he is responding by taking harsh actions against opposition figures, such as arresting Dr. Besigye.
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition leader and four-time presidential candidate, has recently been charged in Uganda's military court. This follows his reported abduction from Nairobi, Kenya, which has alarmed his supporters and family.
Dr. Besigye and his associate Haji Obeid Rutale face charges of unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition. Authorities claim that they were involved in organising meetings abroad to raise funds for activities aimed at disrupting national security. The court has ordered that they remain in custody until December 2nd, when their case will be reviewed further.
As Dr. Besigye's legal team prepares his defence, many supporters are rallying around him, indicating that this situation will continue to develop in the coming weeks. The political landscape in Uganda remains tense as citizens closely watch how these events will affect their rights and freedoms leading up to the elections.
