MPs Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana's Murder Trial Resumes
The pre-trial hearing for two Ugandan Members of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana, is set to continue today at the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala. This case has attracted a lot of public interest due to the serious nature of the charges, which relate to a series of killings in the Masaka region in 2021.
Ssegirinya, who represents Kawempe North, and Ssewanyana, the MP for Makindye West, are facing serious accusations including:
- Multiple counts of murder
- Terrorism
- Attempted murder
They are not alone in this case; five other individuals are also involved.
Justice Alice Komuhangi is overseeing the court proceedings. The prosecution team, led by State Attorneys Richard Birivumbuka and Joseph Kyomuhendo, will present evidence to show that there is enough reason to believe the accused committed these crimes. This is an important step in deciding whether the case should go to a full trial.
On the defence side, experienced lawyers Caleb Alaka, Erias Lukwago, and Shamim Malende are representing the MPs. Their job will be to question the prosecution's evidence and defend their clients.
The prosecution claims that between January and August 2021, the accused took part in violent acts with the aim of intimidating the public. They allege that these actions were politically motivated.
One of the co-accused, Sserwadda, has reportedly admitted to being involved in the murders. He has claimed that he worked with Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana as part of a plan to "reclaim their presidential victory." This adds a political element to the case, linking it to the disputed 2021 presidential election in Uganda.
This trial could have significant consequences not just for those accused but also for Uganda's political scene. The involvement of sitting MPs in such serious allegations raises concerns about politics and justice in the country.
