Martha Karua Claims Snipers Stationed at Makindye Court Ahead of Besigye's Case Hearing

Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, who is part of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s defense team, has spoken out about the challenging conditions they faced during a visit to the Makindye military court in Kampala.

Karua, along with other members of Besigye's legal team, including Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, was allowed access to the premises but denied entry to the courtroom itself.

In a statement shared on social media, Karua described the situation as tense, highlighting the heavy security presence around the court.

"At military court Makindye together it’s the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and other lawyers , we been have allowed access to the premises but not the court, snipers all over civilian buildings near the court," Karua said on X.

The lawyers’ attempt to represent Besigye at the military tribunal was marred by these restrictions, raising serious concerns about the fairness of the proceedings.

Karua and Lukwago are part of a team working to defend the opposition leader, who is facing charges under the controversial military court system.

Karua’s statements have drawn attention to the increasingly hostile environment for legal representatives of political opposition figures in Uganda.
