Can Uganda's Destiny Rest Solely on an 80-Year-Old Leader? Andrew Mwenda Sparks Debate
The political situation in Uganda is under scrutiny, especially with President Yoweri Museveni, now 80 years old, still in power. Journalist Andrew Mwenda raised important questions about whether Uganda should rely on such an elderly leader during a recent episode of the political show UBC Behind the Headlines.
Mwenda criticises Museveni's ambition to build a strong middle class in Uganda. While this goal is commendable, he argues there is no clear plan to support it. A growing middle class needs a stable economy, good infrastructure, and opportunities for entrepreneurship. Without these essentials, the dream of a thriving middle class may remain just that—a dream.
During his visit to Bugolobi, one of Kampala's wealthiest areas, Mwenda was shocked by the state of the roads. He compared it to Mogadishu after years of conflict, describing the roads as nearly impossible to drive on due to potholes and neglect. This raises serious concerns about how Uganda can achieve economic growth when its basic infrastructure is in such disrepair.
Mwenda questions the accountability of Uganda's leaders. He points out that it is not just Museveni who is responsible; there are 529 Members of Parliament, ministers, and permanent secretaries who also have important roles in governance.
In conclusion, Andrew Mwenda’s comments encourage a deeper discussion about Uganda’s leadership and its path forward. As the nation faces economic challenges and infrastructure problems, it becomes clear that effective governance requires more than just one person in charge. The responsibility lies with all leaders to collaborate for a brighter future for Uganda.
