NUP's Rubongoya Reacts as Former Prisoner Sanya Muhydin Admits to Forcibly Implicating Bobi Wine

National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has reacted to a public apology by former political prisoner Sanya Muhydin, who admitted to falsely implicating NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, under duress.

In a candid statement, Muhydin expressed remorse, asking Ugandans and Kyagulanyi for forgiveness.

“I was forced to confess to crimes I did not commit because it was the only way I was told I would get out of prison,” Muhydin revealed.

He explained how, since his release from Luzira Prison, he had been paraded before the media to tarnish Kyagulanyi and NUP, following a confession made at the General Court Martial in Makindye.

Muhydin was among 19 NUP supporters recently pardoned after nearly four years on remand for treason and illegal possession of ammunition charges.

Reacting to the confession, Rubongoya stated;

“It was always a matter of time. Unfortunately, our people never learn.”

His brief but pointed remark highlights NUP's long-standing criticism of what they describe as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s systematic coercion and manipulation of political opponents.

The revelations have reignited discussions about the treatment of political prisoners in Uganda, with critics accusing the government of using intimidation to suppress opposition voices.

NUP has consistently condemned the use of forced confessions, asserting that such tactics undermine justice and democracy.
