Details Shows What Killed Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya; Hospital Gives More Updates

A wave of grief and shock swept through Uganda on Thursday, January 9, 2025, as news broke that Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya had passed away at the age of 36 at Rubaga Hospital.

Despite medical efforts to stabilize his condition, the young politician succumbed to a prolonged illness that had significantly affected his health over the last few months.

"With deep sorrow, Rubaga Hospital announces the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Kawempe North," read a statement from the hospital, confirming the tragic news at 12:10 PM.

Earlier in the day, confusion had spread over Ssegirinya’s health, with unverified reports of his death circulating. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among clarified during a parliamentary session that Ssegirinya’s organs had collapsed but that his heart was still functioning, which made it unethical for doctors to pronounce him dead prematurely.

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, further confirmed that while Ssegirinya was brain-dead and most of his organs had shut down, he had not yet been officially declared dead.

The death of the first-term MP, who was elected to Parliament in 2021, marks a devastating loss to both his constituents and the country.

Known for his passion and commitment to the marginalized, Ssegirinya rose from a humble background in Masaka District to become a beloved figure.

He earned the nickname "Mr. Update" for his active engagement with his constituents on social media, keeping them informed and connected.

Despite his health struggles, Ssegirinya remained dedicated to serving his constituents, often using his parliamentary salary to fund community projects and assist vulnerable individuals in Kawempe North.

His advocacy for justice, democracy, and good governance resonated deeply with many Ugandans.

As tributes pour in, Erias Lukwago, the mayor of Kampala and human rights lawyer, described Ssegirinya as a "freedom fighter" who gave his all to the fight for democracy and justice.

“Ssegirinya loved humanity and had great empathy for others. He was a selfless servant of the people,” Lukwago said.

Rubaga Hospital, in its statement, expressed its condolences to Parliament, the Speaker, Ssegirinya's family, and the people of Kawempe North.

We join the nation in mourning a dedicated servant of the people. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” it concluded.
