More Trouble at Makindye Court as Government Introduces Another Key Suspect in the Case

The General Court Martial in Makindye has resumed hearings in the high-profile case against Rt. Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Hajji Obed Lutale, who are facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms. The prosecutors allege that the duo was found in possession of two pistols and eight bullets while in Kenya, claiming these actions posed a threat to Uganda's national security.

In addition, the prosecution accuses Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale of organizing fundraising meetings in Greece, Switzerland, and Kenya, purportedly to finance activities aimed at destabilizing Uganda.

Both men have denied the charges, with their legal teams arguing that the military court lacks jurisdiction to try civilians for these alleged offenses.

The case took a new twist today as the prosecution announced plans to amend the charge sheet. A new suspect, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, is expected to be added to the case, intensifying the proceedings.

Legal analysts suggest that this development could complicate the defense strategy and prolong the trial.

“This is a politically motivated trial,” Advocate Erias Lukwago stated outside the court.

“Our clients maintain their innocence and question the court’s ability to deliver justice in this matter.” he added.

The case has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that trying civilians in a military court undermines their right to a fair trial.

However, the government maintains that the charges are serious and fall under the military court’s purview due to their national security implications.

Even as the trial unfolds, all eyes remain on the General Court Martial, with many awaiting to see whether the amended charges and the introduction of a new suspect will strengthen the prosecution’s case or further galvanize criticism of the court’s jurisdiction over civilian matters
