Museveni Under Fire for Hosting Delegation with Questionable Backgrounds

President Yoweri Museveni has come under scrutiny following a meeting with a delegation from the United States at State Lodge Nakasero.

The delegation, led by Rollan Roberts, a lawmaker from West Virginia and former US presidential aspirant, discussed issues including trade, democracy, and economic competitiveness.

In a statement on X, Museveni emphasized the importance of addressing "core minimum issues" such as trade, security, and energy, while avoiding divisive topics like sexuality and homosexuality.

He reiterated Uganda’s commitment to becoming a center of gravity for economic partnerships.

However, Duncan Abigaba, a prominent political commentator and government official, raised concerns about the delegation's credibility.

In his response on X, Abigaba questioned the vetting process for visitors meeting the president.

“H.E. Kaguta Museveni, please have a team that vets your visitors before meetings. This is a controversial delegation. One American is convicted of funding international terrorism & the South Sudanese is accused of corruption in Kenya. This affects your hard-earned reputation."

The meeting and Abigaba’s response have sparked debate on social media, with some supporting the president's diplomatic engagement and others calling for stricter scrutiny of international delegations.

Critics argue that hosting individuals with questionable backgrounds could undermine Uganda's image and President Museveni’s efforts to position the country as a key regional player.

The president’s meeting comes amid increasing international focus on Uganda’s policies and governance, particularly regarding human rights and democracy.
