Bruno Fernandes just broke ludicrous Premier League record but embarrassed Man Utd teammates in the process

Bruno Fernandes grabbed the only goal for Manchester United as they lost to Brighton in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim suffers another loss in the Premier League, in a game with little quality from Manchester United.

Fernandes’ penalty was the only opportunity Red Devils fans got to cheer on the day, on what was a miserable fixture between United and the Seagulls.

It was with this very penalty, that Bruno achieved something quite extraordinary, but also simultaneously brought an element of shame to his Manchester United teammates.

Bruno Fernandes breaks Premier League goal involvement record

Thanks to dispatching his penalty, since the start of 2020/2021, Fernandes has been directly involved in 91 Premier League goals.

No midfielder in England’s top flight has been involved in more in any timeframe ever. That is quite incredible from the Portuguese Magnifico.

Fernandes has been a phenomenon for United since joining back in 2020, and his stats more than back it up.

Alongside this, Bruno is also the highest-assisting Portuguese player in Premier League history but is currently in a race for this accolade with Bernardo Silva. Bruno is winning.

But whilst it’s mightily impressive for Bruno, the penalty wasn’t exactly one to celebrate against Brighton in the grand scheme of things.

Bruno’s penalty vs Brighton was the only shot on target for Man Utd

Whilst Bruno’s shot from the spot took him to 91 goal contributions in five years – it also highlighted, and more so embarrassed, a recurring issue in the United squad. A lack of goal threat.

The penalty was the only Manchester United shot on target, all game, at home. It simply isn’t good enough.

Granted, United’s attacking options aren’t exactly what Amorim really wants, but to have zero shots on target from open play in 90 minutes of football is shocking – at any level.

United must find their goalscoring touch soon, if not, they’ll edge closer and closer to that relegation zone as the Premier League season goes on
