Rwanda Defence Forces Escort Over 280 Romanian Mercenaries Who Surrendered to M23 Rebels to Kigali
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has confirmed that it received and escorted more than 280 Romanian mercenaries who were previously fighting alongside the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) in the eastern region of the country.
The mercenaries surrendered to the M23 rebel group after the capture of Goma, a strategic city in the eastern DRC.
In a statement issued by the RDF, it was revealed that the mercenaries had been engaged in combat operations in the conflict-ridden area.
Their decision to surrender came after the M23 forces successfully seized control of Goma, a key city located near the border with Rwanda.
Following their surrender, the RDF facilitated their safe passage to Kigali, where they are now being transported for further processing.
The incident highlights the ongoing volatility in the eastern DRC, where various armed groups, including M23, continue to engage in battles with government forces.
The capture of Goma marked a significant shift in the power dynamics in the region, and the presence of foreign mercenaries has raised concerns about the involvement of external actors in the conflict.
Rwanda has maintained a cautious stance regarding the instability in its neighboring country, emphasizing its commitment to regional security.
