"Rubbish" Winnie Byanyima Sharply Fires Back at Claims Her Husband Besigye is Not a Civilian

Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Uganda’s veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has responded to recent claims that her husband is not a civilian.

The statement came after X user Captain Dr. Ashrap Rubangura suggested that Dr. Besigye is still part of a reserve force and could face charges in a court martial.

Dr. Ashrap Rubangura made the comments online, stating that Dr. Kizza Besigye is not a civilian because he is a member of a reserve force.

He went further to explain that anyone in a reserve force could be deployed by the Commander-in-Chief (C-I-C) at any time.

Rubangura also pointed out that Dr. Besigye's alleged aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, is the only civilian involved in the case.

Rubangura’s comments have sparked controversy and drawn attention to the status of Dr. Besigye, a well-known opposition leader in Uganda.

Dr. Besigye has been a major critic of the Ugandan government and has run for president several times.

He has been arrested multiple times for his opposition activities and is known for his outspoken stance against the current regime.

In response, Winnie Byanyima, who is also a prominent figure in Ugandan politics, rejected Rubangura’s claims.

She took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to set the record straight, calling Rubangura’s statement "rubbish."

Byanyima stated that Dr. Besigye became a civilian when he retired from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 20 years ago.

According to Byanyima, her husband had left the military and fully embraced civilian life long before the current political activities.

This exchange highlights the ongoing political tension in Uganda, where opposition leaders like Dr. Besigye face constant scrutiny and challenges.

His supporters argue that he has been unfairly targeted, while government officials often accuse him of causing unrest.

The debate over whether Dr. Besigye is a civilian or not remains a point of contention, but it also reflects the broader struggles of opposition figures in Uganda, who continue to face challenges to their freedom and political rights.

With the backing of his wife, Winnie Byanyima, Dr. Besigye remains committed to his cause, despite the political and legal battles he faces.
