MPs Brew Trouble for President Ruto as They Demand Museveni to Ask Him for Compensation
Ugandan lawmakers have urged the government to seek compensation from Kenya following the burning of Uganda House in Nairobi during the protests against the Finance Bill on June 25, 2024.
The MPs claimed that Uganda suffered significant losses due to the incident and must be reimbursed by the Kenyan government.
While presenting a report on the 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper, Pian County MP Achia Remigio emphasized that the Ugandan government should take diplomatic action to recover damages.
“The Committee proposed that the Government of Uganda should pursue compensation from the government of Kenya for the destruction of Uganda House Nairobi during the riots,” Remigio stated.
Uganda House, which serves as a diplomatic and commercial property for Ugandan businesses and organizations in Kenya, was torched amid violent anti-government protests in Nairobi.
The demonstrations, triggered by Kenya’s controversial Finance Bill, turned chaotic, leading to destruction of property, including the Ugandan facility.
The demand for compensation is likely to create tension between President Yoweri Museveni and his Kenyan counterpart, President William Ruto.
President Yoweri Museveni, known for maintaining close ties with Kenya, may now be forced to officially engage President William Ruto’s government on the matter.
Ugandan lawmakers said that failure to seek compensation would set a bad precedent, encouraging similar acts in the future without accountability.

With Uganda House being a symbol of Uganda’s presence in Kenya, lawmakers insist that Kenya has a responsibility to ensure the safety of foreign assets within its territory.
