MP Jonathan Odur Brews Trouble for Museveni & AG Kiryowa Kiwanuka in Parliament Chambers
Parliament was thrown into heated debate after MP Jonathan Odur openly criticized President Yoweri Museveni’s recent remarks, arguing that they undermine the rule of law and democracy.
Jonathan Odur expressed concern over the president’s public statements regarding a Supreme Court ruling, questioning why the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, failed to properly advise the head of state on the appropriate legal course of action.
"What the president wrote potentially undermines the rule of law and democracy," Jonathan Odur stated.
"I thought it was incumbent upon the Attorney General to inform him about the next course of action, but it appears this did not happen."
His remarks sparked a wave of reactions in Parliament, with opposition MPs demanding accountability from the government’s legal advisors.
The controversy stems from the Supreme Court’s recent decision on military trials for civilians, which has caused divisions within the government.
While legal experts insist that the ruling must be respected, Yoweri Museveni’s statements have suggested resistance to immediate implementation. This has fueled concerns that the executive branch is interfering with judicial independence.
Opposition leaders argue that Attorney General Kiwanuka has a duty to uphold the law rather than defend political interests.
"If the Attorney General cannot guide the president properly, then he is failing his constitutional duty," Jonathan Odur added.

As tensions rise, pressure is mounting on Museveni to clarify his stance on the Supreme Court ruling and for the Attorney General to take responsibility for any legal missteps.
The unfolding drama has put both the executive and the judiciary on a collision course, with Ugandans watching closely to see how the crisis will be resolved.
