The upcoming 2026 elections in Uganda are already causing divisions within political parties, especially the National Unity Platform (NUP).
A notable example is the disagreement between Nasif Najja, the Wakiso district Speaker, and outgoing Wakiso LC5 District Chairman, Matia Lwanga Bwanika.
Bwanika, who has been serving since 2011, is moving to contest for the Busiro South MP seat and believes the government’s lack of funding for Wakiso Local Government is part of a plan to punish voters in the district for their opposition leanings.
On the other hand, Najja blames Bwanika for failing to actively push for better funding, arguing that Bwanika’s diplomatic approach is ineffective.
Due to their differing views, Bwanika has backed another candidate, Ssempala Kigozi Ssajjalyabeene, to succeed him. However, Ssajja’s past with NUP, including his strained relationship with NUP leader Bobi Wine, has caused more tensions within the party.
This division has led to internal conflicts, with Bwanika’s endorsement of Ssajja risking his chances of securing the NUP ticket for Busiro South.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is also struggling to find a suitable candidate for the Wakiso LC5 seat. While many party members are reluctant to run due to the area's strong opposition presence, Engineer Ian Kyeyune has shown some interest.
However, Kyeyune has set a tough condition: he will only run if he is assured of the NRM flagbearer position without competition.
Kyeyune has faced several defeats in past elections, including in 2011, 2015, and 2020, which have contributed to his political fatigue.
As the 2026 elections approach, both NUP and NRM face significant internal challenges. These divisions could impact their chances in the upcoming polls, making the situation increasingly complex for their respective leaders.
