"You Karagwa, Stop Worrying About My Son" – Museveni Clashes with Byanyima in Fiery Ankole Meeting

President Yoweri Museveni recently visited the Ankole region, where he spoke about economic growth and industrialization.
However, a past conversation between him and Winnie Byanyima, the wife of opposition leader Kizza Besigye, has resurfaced, causing fresh political debates.
During a meeting in the 6th Parliament (1996-2001) in Rwakitura, Byanyima questioned Museveni about his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
She wanted to know why Muhoozi was mobilizing young men to join the army outside official recruitment channels. This question seemed to catch Museveni by surprise.
"You Karagwa, have you started fearing toddlers?" Museveni asked Byanyima, using her family name.
He told her that Muhoozi was not in the Local Defence Unit (LDU) but was simply identifying good candidates for the army.
Byanyima was not satisfied with this answer. She pressed Museveni to explain why the proper recruitment process was not followed.
Museveni, however, dismissed her concerns and moved on to other topics.
Years later, many of the young men recruited by Muhoozi rose through the ranks to become top officers in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
In the same meeting, MPs from Ankole raised concerns that children from their region were benefiting the most from State House scholarships to study abroad.
Museveni responded with a metaphor.
"When I’m grazing my cows, children jump out of the bush and hold my legs crying, seeking assistance. I get confused and decide to help them."
This statement suggested that Museveni was simply helping those who asked for support.
Fast forward to today, a public clash between Muhoozi and Byanyima has brought back this history.
Muhoozi recently criticized Byanyima on social media, accusing her of trying to interfere with his family.
In response, Byanyima warned Muhoozi to respect the long history she shares with his father. She hinted that if Muhoozi continued to misrepresent their past, she might reveal more secrets.
This exchange has sparked discussions in Ugandan politics. Supporters of Muhoozi see him as a strong leader, while critics believe his rise was planned long ago.
The tension between Byanyima and Muhoozi shows that old political battles in Uganda are far from over.
