I Can't Kneel To Propose To A Woman, It’s Against African Tradition & Stupidity - Frank Gashumba

Frank Gashumba, a well-known Ugandan social analyst, recently sparked a heated debate with his views on marriage proposals.

Speaking on Radio 4’s “Entugga” program on March 3, 2025, Gashumba made it clear that he does not believe in kneeling when proposing to a woman.

“I can propose to a woman but not through kneeling. I am a true African man,” he said, explaining that this act of kneeling is something that comes from the Western world and does not fit with African traditions.

Gashumba’s comments have caused a stir on social media, with many people weighing in on his statement.

Some support his views, agreeing that kneeling is not part of African culture, while others disagree, feeling that it is a romantic gesture that should not be dismissed.

During the interview, Gashumba went further to explain that the only time he has ever knelt is in the presence of the Kabaka (King of Buganda), emphasizing that kneeling is a sign of deep respect reserved for those in positions of great authority, such as kings.

“I have only knelt for the Kabaka. I believe that kneeling is meant for people who deserve the highest level of respect,” Gashumba stated.

While some find his perspective refreshing, others believe that it dismisses a modern way of expressing love.

Kneeling to propose has become a common practice in many parts of the world, especially in Western countries, and some people feel that it symbolizes sincerity and commitment in a relationship.

Gashumba’s stance, however, challenges this view by focusing on traditional African values.

His comments highlight the ongoing conversation about cultural traditions and modern influences in relationships.

As society continues to evolve, practices that were once seen as traditional may no longer hold the same significance for younger generations.

Gashumba’s strong words have left many reflecting on the meaning of romantic gestures like marriage proposals.

Is kneeling a necessary part of the proposal process, or is it just a trend that should be left to the past? Only time will tell as these discussions continue to shape our understanding of love and tradition.
