Anita Among Declares Bid for 12th Parliament Speaker Seat, Plans to Hand Over in 2031

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has officially declared her intention to contest for the Speaker’s position in Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
While making this announcement, she also revealed her plan to hand over the leadership to her Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, in 2031.
“I will run for Speaker in the 12th Parliament,” Among stated confidently.
“After serving my term, I will pass the baton to my Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, in 2031.”
Her statement has already sparked discussions in political circles, with many interpreting it as a clear strategy for continuity in the Parliament’s top leadership.
If re-elected, Among will continue leading the House, ensuring stability and policy direction.
Among’s decision to announce her long-term plan is seen as a bold political move.
By publicly stating that she intends to serve until 2031 before stepping aside for Tayebwa, she is sending a strong message about leadership transition.
Political analysts believe this declaration could shape Uganda’s parliamentary politics in the coming years.
Some see it as a well-planned succession strategy, while others may view it as an attempt to control the Speaker’s office for an extended period.
“I believe in structured leadership,” Among explained. “It is important to have a clear transition plan to ensure stability in Parliament.”
Her announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters argue that her leadership has brought progress and continuity will benefit Parliament.
Others, however, believe the Speaker’s seat should remain open for competitive elections.
A Member of Parliament who preferred anonymity said, “She has done a commendable job, but Parliament should allow open competition when the time comes.”
On the other hand, a supporter of Among praised her leadership, stating, “She has transformed Parliament. Why should we change what is working well?”
Among’s declaration sets the stage for intense political activities ahead of the 12th Parliament.
Her leadership style and influence will likely shape Uganda’s parliamentary politics in the coming years.
