NDA arrests three for illegal drug vending in Namisindwa

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has arrested three suspects for illegally vending human and veterinary medicines in open markets in Bukhaweka and Butilu, Namisindwa District.
The suspects Kisubi Jamada, Ali Matovu, and Mutawa Clemensia were found selling classified medicines, including antiretrovirals (ARVs), antimalarial drugs, HIV testing kits, veterinary medicines, and unregistered herbal remedies, all displayed under the scorching sun.
According to NDA spokesperson Abiaz Rwamwiri, the operation was intelligence-led and targeted illegal drug vendors operating in ungazetted areas.
“The suspects were displaying, selling, and advertising human drugs in open markets, which is illegal. We also impounded five boxes of assorted medicines and public address systems used for unlawful advertisement,” Rwamwiri said.
The suspects are currently detained at Mbale District Central Police Station, and their case files have been forwarded to the state attorney for prosecution. They face multiple charges, including possession of classified drugs, illegal advertisement, and operating as pharmacists without licenses.
NDA continues to crack down on unauthorised drug vending, warning the public against purchasing medicines from unregulated sources.
