Bishop Zziwa Condemns Security Attacks on Journalists

Journalists bring us news, inform us about our communities, and ensure accountability. They deserve protection, not violence - Bishop Anthony Zziwa
The Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, the Rev Anthony Zziwa, has condemned security officers for their mistreatment of journalists, criticizing them for using violence against media professionals instead of respecting their role in society.
The remarks by Bishop Zziwa, who also chairs the Uganda Episcopal Conference, follow the February 26 assault on Top TV reporter Ibrahim Miracle, who was severely beaten by security operatives while covering the nomination of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi.
Speaking during an Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Noah Church in Kiyinda-Mityana, Bishop Zziwa expressed deep concern over the growing cases of brutality against journalists.
He emphasized the vital role of the media in informing the public and holding leaders accountable, urging security agencies to respect press freedom.
"It is disheartening to see those entrusted with maintaining law and order turning against journalists, beating them as though they were criminals," Bishop Zziwa said.
"Journalists bring us news, inform us about our communities, and ensure accountability. They deserve protection, not violence."
The bishop called on security agencies to uphold human rights and exercise professionalism, stressing that justice and fairness should guide their conduct, particularly in dealing with the media and the public.
"As a nation, we must respect the dignity of every individual, including journalists. Violence should never be the answer," he added.
Bishop Zziwa’s remarks come amid increasing reports of media harassment, with journalists facing intimidation, arrests, and physical attacks while covering events across the country.
His message serves as a call to action for authorities to ensure a safer working environment for the press and safeguard fundamental freedoms.
