Doreen Nyanjura & Ingrid Turinawe Change Tune on Besigye’s Release, Make a Fresh Plea to Court

Remanded Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, veteran opposition activist Ingrid Turinawe, and three other activists arrived at Buganda Road Court in Kampala with a bold message ahead of their bail ruling.
The group, detained for weeks following their arrest during a protest over the continued detention of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, was seen chanting, "We shall never surrender!" as they entered the courtroom.
The five activists were arrested last month while demanding the release of Dr. Besigye, a seasoned opposition leader who has faced multiple arrests over his political activism.
Their detention has sparked outrage among opposition supporters, who accuse the government of cracking down on political dissent.
During their court appearance, Nyanjura and Turinawe made a fresh plea for their release, arguing that their prolonged detention was politically motivated.
Their legal representatives urged the court to grant them bail, citing their fundamental rights and the need for a fair judicial process.
While the prosecution insisted on keeping the activists in custody, arguing that they could incite more protests, their defense lawyers dismissed these claims as baseless.
Supporters gathered outside the court, echoing the women's calls for freedom and justice.
Even as the court deliberates on the bail ruling, tension remains high, with opposition leaders condemning what they term as state persecution of activists.
Dr. Besigye’s continued detention has further fueled political divisions, with many calling for an end to arbitrary arrests and suppression of dissenting voices.

The court is expected to make a ruling soon, a decision that could shape the next phase of Uganda's political landscape as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.
