Untold Story Of How Gen. Katumba Wamala Escaped “Death" And How He Survived The Assassination

General Edward Katumba Wamala, a notable Ugandan military officer and former Minister of Works and Transport, survived a dramatic assassination attempt on June 1, 2021.
The attack occurred on Kisota Road in Kisaasi, Kampala, as Wamala was on his way to a family member's funeral.
Tragically, the attack resulted in the deaths of his daughter, Brenda Wamala Nantongo, and his driver, Haruna Kayondo.
The attackers, four gunmen on motorcycles, ambushed Wamala's vehicle and riddled it with bullets. Despite being shot in his left arm and chest, Wamala managed to walk away from the scene, his clothes soaked in blood.
He was initially taken to Malcolm Clinic for first aid before being transferred to Nakasero Hospital for further treatment.
Wamala's survival is a testament to his resilience and determination. Born on November 19, 1956, he has had an illustrious military career, serving as the Commander of Land Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) from 2005 to 2013 and as the Chief of Defence Forces from 2013 to 2017.
He also served as Inspector General of Police from 2001 to 2005, being the first active UPDF soldier to hold that position.
The assassination attempt on Wamala was not an isolated incident. It followed a series of similar attacks on high-profile Ugandan officials, raising concerns about the security of government personnel.
The attack resembled the assassination of Ugandan lawmaker Ibrahim Abiriga in 2018, who was also killed by gunmen on motorcycles.
In the aftermath of the attack, Ugandan authorities launched an investigation to apprehend the culprits and ensure the safety of other officials.
The incident elicited widespread condemnation and calls for enhanced security measures to protect public figures.
