Norbert Mao Fires Back at Gen. Muhoozi's Recent Statement, Angry Ugandans Gang Up Against Him
Uganda’s Justice Minister, Norbert Mao, has set off a heated political debate after responding to recent remarks by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
His statement, which focused on the role of a “sincere wingman,” has left many Ugandans questioning his true political position.
In a message full of symbolism, Mao explained that a good wingman does not just follow the leader but also holds them to a high standard, especially in battle.
Many believe this was a direct response to Gen. Muhoozi, who had earlier questioned Mao’s loyalty.
“A real wingman flies alongside you, but also tells you the truth when things are not right,” Mao said, in what seemed like a challenge to Muhoozi’s leadership style.
Ugandans quickly reacted to Mao’s words, with many accusing him of playing both sides—serving in President Yoweri Museveni’s government while maintaining ties with the opposition.
National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters, who have long criticized Mao for joining the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), saw his remarks as an attempt to justify his position.
One Ugandan on social media wrote, “Norbert Mao wants to act like an opposition leader while enjoying the benefits of government. We are not fooled.”
Others argued that his statement revealed deeper divisions in Uganda’s leadership, with Mao trying to present himself as a neutral figure in a government often accused of silencing critics.
With Gen. Muhoozi increasingly being seen as Museveni’s possible successor, Mao’s words could signal cracks within the ruling elite.
“Ugandans are watching. The battle for power is not just about elections. It is happening within the government itself,” said one political analyst.
Mao has not directly responded to the criticism, but his remarks continue to fuel speculation about his role in Uganda’s future. Is he preparing to challenge Muhoozi?
Or is he simply defending himself against accusations of betrayal?
