Bobi Wine Told Who He Should Befriend to Win Northern Region Votes Ahead of 2026 Elections

Political analysts and insiders are debating the best strategy for opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, to expand his influence beyond central Uganda.

According to political commentator Abbas Kazibwe, Bobi Wine should consider forming a coalition with Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) leader Jimmy Akena to gain traction in the northern region.

The north has historically been a stronghold for the UPC, a party founded by Akena’s father, former President Milton Obote.

Despite UPC’s weakened influence, Akena still holds sway in the region, and a partnership with Bobi Wine could provide a crucial boost for the National Unity Platform (NUP) as it seeks to challenge President Yoweri Museveni’s dominance.

Kazibwe argues that without significant support from the north, Bobi Wine’s chances of unseating Museveni remain slim. “If Bobi Wine wants to expand beyond his Buganda base, he must form alliances.

The north remains critical, and Akena, despite his ties with the ruling party, still has influence there,” he stated.

However, the idea of a coalition with Akena is controversial. Critics argue that Akena has been too close to Museveni’s government, making him an unreliable partner for NUP.

Others believe that Bobi Wine should focus on grassroots mobilization rather than relying on traditional political figures who may not have the full trust of the electorate.

With the 2026 elections fast approaching, Bobi Wine faces tough choices on coalition-building.

Whether he will engage Akena or take a different approach remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—penetrating the northern region will be key in his quest to challenge Museveni’s decades-long rule.
